How to Submit a Book Proposal to Venture Publishing
We are pleased that you are interested in submitting a book proposal to our company. While the form of such a proposal may vary, we suggest the following:
- Tell us what the book is about in a few paragraphs. Why is it important that such a book be published? (Our motto is "Books That Matter.")
- Provide a description of each chapter of the book and, if possible, estimate the length of the book in pages.
- Tell us what books may compete with yours, and describe them. It is also helpful if you can tell us their publisher and current selling price. Also, what are the unique advantages your book will have in competing with these existing books?
- If possible, provide a sample chapter. While it is almost never a good idea to write the entire book before submitting it, a chapter, or if that is not possible, a writing sample from related articles or books you have written is helpful.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself, including your current occupation, any writing you have done, and if you have authored or co-authored any previous books, describe them or send us a copy. (We will return any submitted materials.)
- What kind of writing schedule could you follow if you were offered a contract? When would you submit the completed manuscript?
- What special charts, graphs, illustrations, photos, or other features would your book need?
- How could you help in promoting the book? Do you, for instance, lead workshops or are you in a position to influence a professional association, university curriculum, or practitioners in your field to buy the book? What about foreign sales? (We sell books in Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and occasionally, elsewhere.)
- Have you submitted the proposal to other publishers? Why did you submit it to Venture?
If you submit a book proposal to our company, we will usually have the book reviewed by professionals or scholars in your area of expertise. Occasionally we reject a book because we know we cannot market it effectively.
Whether we accept or reject your proposal, we will give you prompt feedback concerning your proposal (usually only a few weeks).
Thank you for thinking of us.
